Blur

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to the questions buyers and end users ask most often during evaluation and rollout.

Does Blur send my prompt data anywhere?

No. Detection and masking happen entirely within the browser before content is sent to the destination AI platform. Your prompt text is never transmitted to Blur servers, third-party analytics, or any external service. The extension operates as a purely client-side privacy layer with zero network exposure for prompt content.

Which AI tools are currently supported?

Blur currently supports three platforms:

  • ChatGPT at chatgpt.com
  • Claude at claude.ai
  • Google Gemini at gemini.google.com

The extension only activates on these specific domains. It does not run on any other websites or AI tools. Support for additional platforms may be added in the future.

What does the free tier include?

Blur works without an account and without a subscription. The free tier includes:

  • Contact Information detection covering email addresses, phone numbers, and physical addresses
  • Names & Entities detection covering people names, company names, and organization references
  • Full compatibility across all three supported AI platforms

Upgrading to Enterprise unlocks Financial & IDs detection (SSNs, credit card numbers), Sensitive Traits detection (health details, dates of birth), Aggressive Mode for stricter matching, and Smart Placeholders that generate realistic replacement names.

How does redaction work?

Blur detects sensitive items in real time as you type. When a match is found, the extension highlights it in the input field and offers to replace it with a clean placeholder before you send the message. This way, the AI platform receives a prompt that preserves the intent of your message without exposing real personal data.

Enterprise users can enable Smart Placeholders, which generate contextually appropriate replacement values (for example, replacing "John Smith" with a realistic but fictional name) rather than generic tokens.

How do teams manage seats and billing?

Owners and admins manage invites, seats, roles, and billing from the Blur team dashboard. From the dashboard you can:

  • Invite new teammates via email
  • Assign roles (owner, admin, or member)
  • Track active seats versus available seats
  • Manage payment methods and view invoices
  • Access the dashboard directly from the extension settings via the "Open Dashboard" button

What should we validate before rollout?

Before rolling Blur out to your full team, we recommend confirming the following:

  1. The extension is installed and pinned to the toolbar for all pilot users
  2. The relevant detection categories have been tested against real prompt samples that reflect your team's typical AI usage
  3. The masking behavior meets your organization's privacy and compliance requirements
  4. Roles and billing ownership have been decided (who will be the owner, who will be admins)
  5. Any internal approval or security review process has been completed

Can Blur be deployed via enterprise browser management?

Yes. Blur can be force-installed or pre-approved through Chrome Enterprise policies (ExtensionInstallForcelist or ExtensionInstallAllowlist). This allows IT teams to deploy the extension across managed devices without requiring individual users to install it manually. Contact maya@blurprivacy.app for deployment guidance.
